Nintendo of America Inc in Redmond, Washington finally got around to announcing the agreement between its parent, Nintendo Co Ltd of and Sony Corp, which will pave the way for an international industry standard for CD-ROM in consumer electronics: Sony will offer a new game system combining Nintendo’s Super NES game system with a CD-ROM drive so that it plays both Super NES cartridge games and compact disk software; and Nintendo will make and market a compact disk accessory for attachment to the Super NES using the CD-ROM XA format, with a very tentative launch date in the US and Japan set for next August.
