Making its vaulting ambitions clear, MCI Communications Corp’s new partner, Rutherford, New Jersey-based Nextel Communications Inc has plunged into the Canadian market in a deal with Clearnet Inc and Motorola Canada Ltd. The aim is to take its concept of upgrading Specialised Mobile Radio systems into full service cellular networks into 26 of the top 33 markets in Canada. Its two partners will combine their 800MHz businesses under the Clearnet name, and Nextel will get a minority stake under its existing agreements with Motorola Inc, which has agreed to transfer its properties to Nextel in return for an equity stake in the firm.
