The i85s, produced by Motorola, contains a number of applications. Nextel customers will be able to download these applications onto their phones from the nextel.com website.
This is just the beginning. The incredible thing about Java is that software applications that many find critical to running their businesses can run on a Nextel phone, said Tim Donahue, president and CEO of Nextel. And with hundreds of Java programmers developing new programs, our customers will always have easy access to the latest software developments.
Initially, Nextel will charge customers access fees for applications that run directly on the unit. For further applications there will be a download charge, while preloaded applications may be avail on the Web for free,
It is early yet, but there will be monthly fees for some applications, downloading fees and, then eventually, revenue sharing similar to the Palm revenue model, Mr Donahue said.
