According to the company, when the NexiONE universal serial bus (USB) thumb drive is inserted into a computer with online connectivity, its operating system automatically connects to the internet and opens a secure ‘tunnel’ back to the user’s network. The tunnel provides secure access to software applications or files stored on the remote network.
The solution reduces the need to travel with a portable computer and hard drive to access sensitive remote data or applications. The company said that it is based on a software stack that resides on a USB thumb drive, which include a live operating system that either runs under Windows or as a fully bootable operating system from BIOS. It also includes encryption algorithm and firewall.
We developed this solution by request of the United States Department of Defense, said Richard Urrea, chief executive at Nexicon. The company is also obtaining patents for the NexiONE product.
NexiONE v1.4 will be released in the first quarter of 2008 at a price range of $300 to $500 per unit.
Nexicon’s competitor RedCannon also offers a USB thumb drive, Fireball KeyPoint, which includes Citrix Remote Access Suite with its endpoint security solution for remote access.
