NEWS IN BRIEF: C&W SPRINT BID

By CBR Staff Writer

Underlining that the denials all carefully side-stepped the question and answered ones that had not been asked, the Wall Street Journal is sticking to its story that Cable & Wireless Plc is considering bidding for Sprint Corp (CI No 3124). It quotes Sprint chief saying he would consider striking further alliances or even selling the company if it proved to be a better way to execute our strategy; Cable & Wireless would need to acquire Sprint rather than the other way round because the UK companies key contracts and agreements are in the more politically sensitive parts of the world, and are encumbered with requirements that they become void and have to be renegotiated should control of Cable & Wireless pass to another.
