NEWS IN BRIEF: APPLE NEXT BUY

By CBR Staff Writer

The consensus – certainly at Be Inc – is that Apple Computer Inc ended up buying NeXT Software Inc rather than Be because what it felt it most needed was an industrial strength server operating system for business. But doesn’t it need to regain undisputed technical and functional leadership on the desktop, too? On that basis, doesn’t it need to buy Be as well as NeXT and exploit what microkernels were meant to be about, a single operating system with multiple personalities, so that it could offer Mac OS, NeXTstep and BeOS personalities on the same Machine of the future?
