Newbridge Networks Corp and Intelect Visual Communications Corp, a subsidiary of Intelect Communications Systems Ltd, are working together to produce an integrated local area network internetworking solution for visual communications. The solution will consist of Newbridge’s VIVID Asynchronous Transfer Mode switched virtual router, together with Intelect’s LANscape, a desktop local network-based videoconferencing system, and VuBridge, a videoconferencing gateway to the wide area network environment. The companies claim that Intelect’s desktop videoconferencing, based on Motion-JPEG compression technology, provides near-television quality video. Under the VIVID Switched Virtual Routing solution, says Newbridge, the number of simultaneous videoconferences can be greatly increased, using existing networks. Migration to switched virtual routing increases routing capacity in the network, so that with dedicated Ethernet between the desktop and an ATM-based backbone there is plenty of bandwidth for video. Separately, Newbridge has also signed a deal with Acecomm Corp under which Acecomm will develop billing data collection software for service providers using Newbridge’s X.25, Frame Relay and ATM Switched Virtual Circuit networks. The company hopes to introduce the software as part of the MainStreet family this month.
