New York Attorney General sues “spammers”

New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer is to sue a company for sending more than 500 million messages to computer users, many of which were "spam" advertisements. Spitzer alleges MonsterHut.com of Niagara Falls has sent hundreds of millions of unwanted ads by email since March 2001.

MonsterHut officials have not commented on the allegations, but according to court records the company claims that the recipients requested the messages through permission-based agreements.

Spitzer has launched the case after around 750,000 computer users complained about receiving MonsterHut.com spam MonsterHut.com could face civil penalties of $500 for each offence if found guilty.
