The new UK telephone codes started working yesterday (really we tried one!) and will run in parallel with the old ones until April next year, at which point chaos will no doubt reign: in general you add a 1 after the initial Subscriber Trunk Dialling 0, so to call this office from outside London, you dial 0171 and the number, to call Haslemere you dial 01428 and the number; the international dialling code from the UK will drop the 1, so to call the US, you dial 001 instead of 0101 – easy, i’n’it; since the new numbers now work, it’s a good idea to put only the new number on any publications or stationery you are having printed.
