Hewlett-Packard Co has introduced the HP Omnibook 430: application software is now installed on a hard disk drive instead of in the units internal memory or ROM; there are three models: the top of the line F1038A 430 offers 6Mb RAM, a Maxtor PCMCIA Type III 105Mb hard disk drive at $1,600; the F1037A offers 4Mb RAM at $1,400; and the F1035A offers a 40MB PCMCIA hard disk and 2MB of RAM for $1,200; it weighs 2.9 pounds, comes with a full-size 85-key keyboard and is powered by a 25MHz Texas Instruments Inc TI486SLC processor; it features the firm’s serial infra-red technology; under an upgrade programme, Omnibook 425 owners can pay $600 for a 105Mb hard disk drive preinstalled with MS-DOS 6.2, Windows 3.1, Word 6.0, Excel 5.0, and 512Kb one-time programmable card in drive D containing the system software; a 40Mb drive upgrade with the same software pre-installed costs $300.
