A new industry group, the Mobile Data Association, is due to come into being next week, with the aim of awakening users to the benefits of mobile communications. While it is initially to be a purely UK association, it may be expanded in around 12 months into a European group. Its aims are to provide a central point of contact for users on what wireless services are available; to encourage value-added resellers and system integrators to provide mobile applications; to stimulate growth in the market, and to lobby such bodies as the Department of Trade & Industry and the Office of Telecommunications on issues such as licensing, frequency allocation, and regulations. The new body starts life with Cognito Ltd, L M Ericsson Telefon AB, France Telecom Network Services, Lotus Development Corp, Motorola Inc, RAM Mobile Data Ltd and Toshiba Information Systems Inc as members.
