Xerox Corp’s XSoft division in Palo Alto yesterday introduced a document management system that it says is the first commercial version of linguistic and browsing technologies developed at its Palo Alto Research Center: Visual Recall will begin shipping through XSoft resellers in June at $400 and is designed to enable users running Windows in a NetWare-based workgroup to locate, view and make use of documents, no matter where the information resides; Visual Recall is based on its Xerox’s TextDataBase technology that uses advanced linguistic comprehension techniques to perform complex multilingual indexing and searching for the content of an information file; the product also uses Information Visualisation technology that applies two- and three-dimensional modelling and graphics in the results of document searches; it also incorporates browsing capabilities so that users can view any retrieved document instantly, and without requiring the application in which it was created, print the document or send it as a facsimile message while keeping basic formatting intact.
