Solutions Software Ltd, the Maidenhead, Berkshire based company has simultaneously announced a separate company and a new retrieval system, both called Extract. Extract Ltd is a subsidary of five-year-old Software Solutions, which turned over almost UKP2m last year. Extract is a text and image retrieval system, originated for personal computers. Designed to exploit the growing document processing market, Extract can retrieve text, documents related to text, or just documents, provided they have a tag line of text. Search facility features include one word searches, string searches, wildcard searches, and/or/not searches and a phonetic search for bad spellers. As it indexes files, Extract removes words such as to/but/it, increasing search speeds. Several indexes can be created, enabling the user to look up a subject in a certain area. Extract will also load a word processor if a user wishes to edit a file. Extract supports the main word processor formats, including WordStar, Wordperfect and MSWord. It runs under C and will be available under DEC’s VAX/VMS, Unix and AS/400 from the middle of next year. Costs are, UKP1,250 for a single user, rising to UKP7,500 for the networked version for 16 or more users.
