NEW ALPHA WORK SPIED AT DEC’S EUREKA EVENT

By CBR Staff Writer

Compaq Computer Corp has reportedly decided to call the next version of its Digital Unix V4.0e instead of V5. The ‘Steel’ release is geared towards the EV6 21265 Alpha processor. Terry Shannon, writing in Shannon Knows Distributed Enterprise Computing from DEC’s European Eureka user event said the dual- processor low-end Compaq EV6 systems were also spotted, in addition to TL6 575MHz AlphaServer 8×00 systems. He’s expecting a November product announcement. The EV8 Arana CPU supposedly features four-way symmetric multithreading. While Compaq will sell VAXes through 2000 Shannon says supplies of some models are running low.
