New Samsung Galaxy Note 7 makes debut, boosts mobile security with iris scanner

News: New release updates phablet with security and performance features.

By Vinod

Samsung has launched the Galaxy Note 7, which updates its flagship phablet line with new durability and security features.

A stand out feature is the new iris scanner, which combined with Samsung's Knox software will boost the security of the device. Samsung developed its own proprietary algorithm to assign a digital signature to each user's iris. Previous Samsung models have featured a fingerprint scanner but the use of the iris as a biometric has yet to gain wide usage.

As well as allowing users to secure their own documents and browse securely while using the phone's internet browser, Samsung is working with mobile banking providers to allow them to incorporate iris scanning into their apps.

Samsung Pay will also now be able to use the iris scanner to provide additional security to contactless payments.

Samsung has also continued with the focus on core features that started with the Galaxy S7. This includes water resistance, with the smartphone certified with the IP68 durability accreditation.

The stylus, the S Pen has been upgraded.
Users can create and share GIF animations with Smart Select, and new Air Command functions, including Magnify and Translate, enable users to zoom in on the screen or convert languages by hovering over text.

Samsung Notes, a new unified app allows users to jot down handwritten notes, draw, or edit memos from one location using the S Pen.

“The Galaxy Note7 combines productivity and entertainment, and strong security features. Powering a robust ecosystem, it is the ideal device for those who want to achieve more in life,” said DJ Koh, President of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics.

The device will be available from 2 September and can be pre-ordered from 16 August.
