MWC: Samsung Gear adds Oculus-made controller to new VR headset

The South Korean company’s new Gear VR controller lets users point, drag and shoot in VR.

Samsung has launched a new Gear VR headset which features an Oculus-built controller for interacting with virtual reality content.

The one-hand controller has a touchpad for quicker selection and integration in VR apps, allowing several forms of motion, including the ability to point, drag and drop, tilt and shoot. A Trigger button also allows for improved gaming experiences.

The home, volume and back keys located on the controller give users more control without having to take their focus away from the content. The controller can be attached to the hand with a wrist strap.

The new model also features an upgraded 42mm lenses with the same 101-degree field of view, with t improved distortion correction technology aimed at reducing motion sickness.

The new Samsung Gear VR Controller will work with existing Gear VR headsets and will be available to buy separately.

It will support both micro USB and USB Type-C port with a converter in-box. The new Gear VR is compatible with the Galaxy S7, S7 edge, Note5, S6 edge+, S6 and S6 edge smartphones.

Samsung Electronics executive vice president of mobile communications business Younghee Lee said: “At Samsung, we are focused on setting and exceeding the standard for VR experiences, making them even more accessible and delivering the highest in quality.

“The Gear VR with Controller expands our VR ecosystem to help consumers get more engaged and immersed in VR content – whether it’s games or videos.”

Samsung did not reveal the price and release date for the Gear VR and Controller.

A new report has estimated that the virtual reality market will worth over $9bn by the year 2021 and will continue to grow exponentially with both dedicated VR platforms and smartphone VR platforms taking the lead.

Dedicated VR platforms are expected to reach 22 million in 2021, which is an 800% increase over the next four years.
