Programmable Logic Device manufacturer Altera along with China Mobile has jointly showcased a C-RAN platform targeting virtualised 5G wireless networks.

According to Altera, C-RAN can be used to create new business models for network operators along with new applications that can be used by 5G wireless network users.

The experience is likely to improve user experience by providing higher spectrum efficiency and channel capacity, reduce the network power consumption, and support agile and flexible network deployments.

Altera and China Mobile Research Institute CMRI entered into strategic collaboration back in 2014 and has been working on innovative wireless network solution that are expected to provide lower power consumption, lower total operating costs and higher scalability 5G networks .

China Mobile Research Institute chief scientist Chih-Lin I said: "As a key partner helping to realize the industry vision of the C-RAN architecture-based 5G wireless network, Altera provided advanced technologies and great support to our project as we conducted the research and development together."

Altera Communications Business Unit VP Francis Chow said: "Our close collaboration with China Mobile will enable Altera to continuously innovate and offer competitive products and technologies to meet the demands of next-generation wireless networks in terms of power, performance, flexibility and cost; and we are honored to work with CMRI on future architectures."
