As predicted (CI No 3,031), the National Science Foundation says it won’t be renewing its agreement with Network Solutions Inc for assigning Internet domain names once the current monopoly agreement ends in March 1998, and may end it before that date. The Foundation is looking for the Internet industry itself to manage the process of Internet registration, possibly through the existing International Ad Hoc Committee, which has already come out with its first set of proposals. Meanwhile, reports the Wall Street Journal, a rival group calling itself eDNS, for Enhanced Domain Name Service, produced a set of proposals for top level domains at a meeting in Atlanta last month. Founded by Karl Denninger, president of Chicago-based Internet service provider MCSNet Inc, eDNS is a collaborative effort by service providers.
