NETSCAPE LOOKS WORLDWIDE WITH LOCAL NETCENTERS

By CBR Staff Writer

Netscape Communications Corp extended its portal ambitions with a big push out of its US base with nine international sites with local content. And it has linked with Excite Inc, which will provide local content and search services in Australia, France, Germany, Japan, the UK and Italy. It is also working with other partners to provide international content in Latin America and China. Netscape made the move because 30% of the eight million members of its global Netcenter site come from outside the US and forecasts predict that by 2002 half of all internet users will be from outside the US. The international drive is part of Netscape’s ‘Project Turbo’, designed to make Netcenter the fastest growing internet portal. This follows the company’s belief that its future lies as a portal rather than a software company.
