San Jose, California-based NetManage has released a new version of the Z-Mail electronic mail package for Unix. Version 4.0.1 has added native support for all major Unix platforms, a refined user interface, advanced scripting facilities, and integration with NetManage’s ODS Open Directory Services. ODS enables the creation of a corporate address book with existing open directory structures giving access to a central address book with the minimum of effort, say the company. In fact the next release of Z-Mail for Unix will add both native LDAP lightweight directory access and IMAP4 Internet message access protocol support into both ASCII terminal and Unix-based Motif graphical user interface clients. The Cupertino, California-based company claims Z-Mail for Unix is the only commercially available native electronic- mail system for both Motif and ASCII terminal users on the Unix platform. Z-Mail for Unix includes a number of advanced rules and mail-filtering capabilities, according to the company. For advanced users, the Z-Script scripting language can be used to create a custom interface, and sophsticated processes for handling their mail messages, including automatic responses, forwarding, and other programmable actions. NetManage acquired Z- Mail from Network Computing Devices Inc last year (CI No 2,928), which had bought it from Z-Code Software Corp two years earlier (CI No 2,342).
