The Somerset, New Jersey-based company builds virtual private network (VPN) appliances that use the secure sockets layer (SSL) to let remote network users securely tunnel a way to their corporate networks through a web browser. This small but fast growing market segment looks very crowded with Aventail Corp and Neoteris Inc leading a chasing pack of niche vendors that includes uRoam, Array Networks, Whale, Seagull and InfoExpress, Aspelle, OpenReach and Lemon Planet.

Netilla’s investors, which include Ascend Venture Group, Mid-Atlantic Venture Funds, Early Stage Enterprises LP, NJTC Venture Fund and the Telecommunications Development Fund have so far handed over in excess of $17m.

The company claims it has 300 customers and this week releases the latest Version 4 of the Netilla Security Platform which extends secure access to enterprise client/server applications. It uses HTTP reverse proxy and the company’s VirtualAdapter to connect with any application running under Unix, Linux, Windows or mainframe operating system. Netilla said it would also be adding a new $65,000 high-capacity carrier-class appliance to its range, which will support thousands of concurrent users.
