Milpitas, California-based builder of servers NetFrame Systems Inc claims to have the the industry’s first fault-tolerant superservers, and says that they run standard Novell Inc NetWare and Microsoft Corp LAN Manager. The NetFrame MultiProcessor Server Architecture eliminates single points of failure, and the new models are field-upgradable from the existing NetFrame models. The NF450FT supports up to 10 processors using Intel Corp’s 50MHz 80486, and takes up to eight Ethernets and/or Token-Rings, with 256Mb of error detecting and correcting memory at from $70,000. The NF250FT supports up to five processors, expands to 33Gb of disk and can have up to 128Mb of error detecting and correcting memory. It is from $30,000. The bigger one is out now with the NF250FT following next month. The company does not say how its fault-tolerance is implemented, but says that the line supports SCSI disk, tape and optical storage devices; Apple Filing Protocol, TCP/IP, Xerox Network System, Network File System and SDLC and HDLC protocols. SunSoft’s Solaris and Univel’s Unix System V.4 will be supported in the second half of the year.
