Hit Netflix show House of Cards is now streaming in 4K in America – but only for the latest TVs.
Only newer 4K televisions have the necessary decoder built in to view Netflix shows in Ultra HD 4K, which so far is available on the popular Kevin Spacey political series, as well as some nature programmes.
The new higher resolution service is claimed to offer bright, colourful scenes with sharper and smoother images.
Netflix spokesman Joris Evers told Multichannel News: "It’s available everywhere Netflix is available and the first TV sets are hitting reviewer’s desks and store shelves now."
According to Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings, streaming 4K content requires an average speed of 15.6 Mbps.
Netflix revealed its plans in January to integrate 4K streaming app in new TVs from Sony, LG Electronics, Vizio and Samsung Electronics, which could decode such signals without requiring any separate streaming devices.
Comcast is also developing a 4K VOD app which would be introduced on new Samsung 4K TVs to deliver 4K content using consumers’ Internet connection.
