Reed Hastings, the chief executive of popular streaming video service Netflix, has been reportedly meeting major cable operators to discuss partnerships of late.

Sources familiar with the events were quoted by Reuters as saying that if he manages to partner with any one of them, Netflix would add its online video streaming into existing cable services.

Netflix may be added as an additional on-demand option for cable subscribers through their set-top boxes.

It is said that it was not clear exactly as to how Netflix would be added.

A partnership with cable providers would make Netflix compete with cable channels such as HBO, Showtime and Starz, which provide original shows and movies.

The company has recently announced on its blog post that users can sign-up for Netflix directly on their Apple TV and pay through iTunes account.

With the new third generation Apple TV, users will be able to watch movies and television streaming on Netflix in 1080p high definition and with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, Netflix said.
