NEC’S NEW MEMORY CHIP USES VSTEP DEVICE TECHNOLOGY

By CBR Staff Writer

NEC Corp’s new 1Kb optical memory chip (CI No 1,107) uses what the company calls Vertical-to-Surface Transmission Electro Photonic, VSTEP device technology, and the part has 1,024 30 micron VSTEP elements at right angles to a 1mm square GaAs substrate: the VSTEP elements detect, emit and store optical signals, and NEC says that the next step in its optical effort will be to design a 1M-bit optical memory chip in the same technology.
