Japanese personal computer market leader NEC Corp is scheduled to ship its first laptop computer with a full colour liquid crystal diode display onto the Japanese market this week: the PC-9801 LX5C, is a smaller version of NEC’s 40Mb PC 9801LX series machine and will sell for $5,160; the display has a 640 by 400 pixel resolution and is a backlit supertwist nematic screen capable of putting up eight colours – white, green, red, blue, yellow, water blue, purple and black; the box has a 12MHz 640Kb 80286 processor expandable to 3.6Mb, two 1Mb 3.5 floppy disks, and a 40Mb 3.5 Winchester; it runs the multitasking Japanese MS-OS/2 and PC-UX/V 2.0 Unix; it measures 15 by 13.3 by 4.5 high and weighs a shoulder-wrenching 19 lbs; NEC looks to sell 10,000 of the things in the first year.
