NEC wants to grab a chunk of the European market when it starts selling CE-based handheld devices in the UK and France this summer. The company, which already has a strong presence in the US and Japan, wants to increase its global market share to more than 10%, with the move into Europe.
According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, NEC will be launching a sub-notebook style computer from its Mobile Gear range in mid- July. A handheld device will follow in October. CE currently trails a poor third in the European PDA market. London-based Psion Plc is the market leader with its Organiser range, followed by Palm OS-based devices.
