NEC Corp has won two major orders for supercomputers, from research institutes in Switzerland and Singapore. The Swiss Center for Scientific Computing has ordered a 700m yen ($6.7m) NEC SX5/8A for delivery by the end of January. The machine will be used for molecular science and fluid dynamics research.

NEC will also deliver a 100m yen ($953,000) SX-4/8A supercomputer to

Singapore’s meteorological service in Singapore by the end of December. It will be used for weather forecasting, including predicting the effects of volcanic eruptions and the so-called El Nino phenomenon.

NEC has sold 47 of its latest supercomputer models, 29 to foreign buyers, taking advantage of a slowdown in product development and expansion of computational power by rival US companies.
