NEC (UK) Ltd, the UK operation of the Japanese consumer electronics firm, has responded to the challenge of rival Pioneer Electronic Corp’s 501 50-inch plasma monitor, releasing its own version, the PlasmaSync 5000W. NEC claims that its screen gives better quality resolution, particularly when 4:3 PC or traditional television images are expanded to wide-screen 16:9 images.
NEC says that its advantage is two-fold. In comparisons of the top end products, NEC PlasmaSync 5000W’s 1365 by 768 pixels has more pixels than Pioneer’s 1280 by 768. And in NEC’s screens, the pixels are square, giving a truer picture than Pioneer’s rectangular shapes when the screen sizes are modified.
PlasmaSync 5000W will be aimed at boardrooms of large financial firms, which need high-resolution screens for real-time business modelling and budgeting. NEC, which has over 1000 customers for its high-end screens, expects to sell more than 200 units per year. PlasmaSync 5000W costs 14,000 pounds ($22,400). It is compatible with the highest graphics resolution standards, including Super Video Graphics Array (SVGA) and Super Extended Graphics Array (SXGA). It weighs 58 kg and is 107mm thick.
