NEC READIES 64-BIT MIPS RISC CPU FOR CE

NEC Corp has announced that its new VR4121 processor chip will support the latest version of Microsoft’s Corp’s Windows CE embedded operating system (CI No 3,513). The chip – available in 131 MHz and 168MHz versions – is a 64-bit MIPS RISC component specifically aimed at the handheld PC market. To this end, the chip has an on-chip IrDA infra-red interface and a 10 bit digital-analog converter for audio output. The VR4121 will be available in the first quarter, 1999, and will cost $25 each in 10,000-unit quantities
