NEC PLAN TO MAKE 10,000 POWERMATE 386s A YEAR IN US

By CBR Staff Writer

NEC Corp says that if the $300m a year of US sanctions on Japanese imports – imposed in April in retaliation for Japan’s alleged failure to live up to the chip pact – are not lifted, it will start manufacturing its new Powermate 386 80386-based AT-alike at a rate of 10,000 a year at its Boxborough, Massachusetts plant. In June it began making 3,000 80286 micros a month at the NEC Information Systems plant.
