As of November 11, NEC Corp began work at its Open Systems Technology Laboratory in Princeton New Jersey, where it plans to work on the core development of future operating systems with Unix System Laboratories Inc, as well as the development of distributed computing technology; it will also cultivate contacts with US software houses to promote NEC’s adoption of US-developed Unix software on its 4800 complex and reduced instruction set workstation series, as well as on the fault-tolerant FT20 computer that it buys OEM from Stratus Computer Inc; it will also participate in US-based international organisations such as the UK end of X/Open Co Ltd, the X Consortium and the Object Management Group in order to facilitate the adoption of those standards by NEC products; the centre starts off with 15 employees, and expects to have 50 by 1993; one of the reasons for locating in New Jersey was availability of Unix engineers and the proximity of the headquarters of the likes of Unix Labs and Unix International.
