NEC Business Systems (Europe) Ltd is challenging IBM’s lacklustre Convertible lap-top with the Multi-speed Portable. Based on its own 9.54MHz V30 equivalent to the 8086, the machine has two 720Kb floppies, detachable Supertwist LCD display, battery-backed semiconductor secondary storage, and RS232, RGB and printer ports, for UKP1,600. The company has also introduced its first AT-alike version of the Advanced Personal Computer IV as the Powermate 1, here and in the US. The 8MHz 80286-based box with 640Kb CPU, 1.2Mb floppy, 20Mb Winchester, 640 by 400 colour screen is UKP2,700.
