NEC Corp has launched it first encryption board for Unix servers, the NX7000. A company official said the boards protect computer systems from unauthorized access, and the company expects good sales because the incidence of damage caused in break-ins has risen in tandem with the boom in internet usage.

Instead of using software to perform the encryption, the board contains its own encryption function, reducing the burden on the microprocessor and speeding up the encryption and decryption process. Encryption is carried out by three algorithms, including the RSA method.

The boards are priced at 660,000 yen ($5,400 each) and a program to manage the processing performed by the board costs 400,000 yen ($3,275).
