NEC FORMS SAUDI SUBSIDIARY TO OUST IBM FROM TOP SPOT

By CBR Staff Writer

The Arab world still represents one of the most underdeveloped computer markets in the world, and after IBM and NCR, and latterly DEC, not too many companies have seriously penetrated the oil-rich desert sheikdoms. NEC Corp intends to change all that, and having beaten Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm of West Germany and De La Rue Plc of the UK to a fingerprint recognition system from the Saudi Arabian Interior Ministry it has formed NEC Saudi Arabia to oust IBM from its – mainly military – top spot with commercial systems.
