NEC Corp say it has become the first company in the world to succeed in mounting microchips on a PC mother board with unleaded solder. A company official said NEC will start using the technology on notebook PCs in the near future and plans to stop using lead to solder chips on mother boards for all notebook computers produced in Japan within 18 months. The new zinc solder method can be carried out at the same temperature as the conventional lead solder method, he said. Until now, nonlead solder has only been used to mount electronic parts which are heat-resistant, but could not be used for mounting key parts on a mother board because the components are too sensitive to heat.
