NEC CONSIDER JOINT VENTURE IN CHINA

NEC Corp is considering setting up a joint venture in China to produce mobile phones for the domestic market: a possible site is Wuhan, Hubei Province, where NEC’s optical fibre production unit is located, but other details have not been finalised; China’s mobile phone market is forecast to grow to 1m units in the 1994 business year ending March 1995; other Japanese telecommunications equipment companies such as Fujitsu Ltd, Hitachi Ltd and Oki Electric Industry Co Ltd earlier said they were also discussing making mobile phones in China; Hitachi has already started selling its mobile phones in China via technical transfers to its Chinese telecommunications partner.
