According to the companies, NEC’s application processor and Telegent’s TV-on-a-Chip together enable simultaneous, high-definition multimedia capabilities with extremely low power consumption. NEC and Telegent claim that the high-performance platform for mobile TV, music and communications combines better video reception and high-performance video processing on mobile phones.

Weijie Yun, president and CEO of Telegent, commented: NEC Electronics’ adoption of Telegent Systems’ mobile TV solution demonstrates the benefits of free-to-air mobile TV in top-tier handset providers.

Masakazu Yamashina, general manager of NEC’s mobile systems division, added: This solution will help mobile phone manufacturers more easily develop handsets with mobile TV capabilities.

Telegent’s solutions are based on its SureTrak technology, which integrates all major mobile TV receiver functionalities, from antenna input to digital video output. According to Telegent, the SureTrak technology reduces power consumption and allows up to four and a half hours of viewing time on cell phones. NEC commented that it is also developing new reference designs based on its Medity solution for 3G handsets.

The companies are to provide a demonstration of the platform at the 3GSM conference in Barcelona, Spain.
