NCR Corp has announced plans to market the Alis office automation system developed by Applix Inc on its Tower line of Unix supermicros. Under the agreement, effective immediately, NCR will sell Alis running on the NCR 32/400 and 32/600, and the 32/800 multiprocessor micros, connected by an Ethernet network with NCR 80286-based personal computers using PC Alis. NCR will also market Alis for use on its line of Tower character terminals. Alis offers a range of integrated office-automation functions, including multi-font word processing, spreadsheets, business graphics, free-hand drawing, and database management. Using the Tower family’s networking capabilities, Alis can also provide electronic mail, co-ordinated meeting scheduling and work-group file and resource sharing, and local area network communications.NCR intends to market proprietary value-added applications for its Alis users, including a computer-based training course and a system administrator package. Alis Manager, an NCR system administrator package, enables administrators who know nothing about Unix and have no desire to learn, to install, configure, and maintain an Alis office network, including administration of user identifiers, printers and the file system, without the need to get to grips with the Unix programming shell.
