NCR ADOPTS BRIT WILLOW’s NEWMARCH UNIX TAPE BACK-UP SOFTWARE

By CBR Staff Writer

NCR Corp has a worldwide agreement with UK system software developers Willow Ltd, Wimborne, Dorset for Willow’s Newmarch Unix-based archiving software. Used with the 2.3Gb NCR’s 6091 8mm SCSI tape subsystem, the software provides an automatic back up environment. According to NCR, a test site using the new combination went from attended nightly back-ups requiring 20 hours per week down to unattended back-ups needing only 10 minutes of operator time per week. This was partly achieved by reducing the number of back-up volume tapes from six per night to six per week, with the Newmarch software able to use the entire high capacity tape, and able to append to existing archives already on tape. The agreement comes after several months of transatlantic cooperation between the two firms.
