Why did the rollout of Oracle’s Network Computing Inc strategy appear to overshadow Oracle8’s debut earlier in the week? Because, one insider told us, Oracle has a dozen or more full- time marketing writers dedicated to promoting and hyping technologies and architectures. Take Oracle’s still nebulous NCA Network Computing Architecture. Is it a fish, is it a bird, is it a plane, indeed is it anything tangible at all? Oracle’s literature says it’s a framework providing a standards-based environment in which applications can be easily assembled from distributed components and deployed in a thin client environment. The problem is that when Oracle unloaded this message on the industry its development people had nothing at all to support it.
