Austin, Texas-based Btrieve Technologies Inc has announced Btrieve 6.15 NetWare Loadable Module, a navigational client-server environment for Novell Inc’s NetWare operating system. According to the company, Btrieve 6.15’s navigational client-server environment enables programmers to chart the fastest path to their data by designing relational structures and following them with precise directional controls to retrieve, insert, delete and update distributed data. The offering is also said to feature scalability from stand-alone to client-server systems, improved transaction processing and increased overall performance. The company says the benefits of the navigational client-server approach include the ability to control distributed data routines in a client-server environment, and integrate existing application code to upgrade non-SQL applications to client-server. The company also says the offering will enable integration with SQL through its MicroKernel Database Architecture. This separates the database model from low-level functions common to all databases, and supports relational, navigational and object-oriented data access models while storing all data in a common model-independent format. According to the company, this enables users to take full advantage of new applications with different and complex data types, while avoiding the expense of a database migration. For example, it suggests, mission-critical data can be managed by accounting applications using the Btrieve navigational model, and subsequently accessed by new SQL decision support tools using a relational model, without impacting the original system. The Btrieve 6.15 NetWare Loadable Module will be available next month at a promotional upgrade price of $100 for a five-user version. Upgrades to 10, 20, 50, 100 and unlimited numbers of users will be available through channel partners.
