National Semiconductor Corp is making its mark with its 32GX32 32-bit embedded microprocessor, developed with Canon Inc for printer control: the part is being used by Alps America Inc in a new light-emitting diode printer that maintains a 20-page-per-minute output rate in a multiuser environment, even whenprinting complex graphics; the LPX2020 printer is compatible with Hewlett-Packard’s LaserJet Series II printer and can be upgraded to emulate Adobe Systems’ PostScript; as for the chip, it enables the printer to maintain a constant page-per-minute output regardless of the number of symbols or graphical representations being printed, and features large on-chip instruction and data caches, and comes with clock frequencies up to 30MHz.
