National Semiconductor Corp plans to phase out its MOS I CMOS wafer fab in West Jordan, Utah over the next two years, transferring production to plants in South Portland, Maine, and Greenock, Scotland: the Utah facility which produces logic, analogue communication and discrete products is said to have been running below capacity and is being closed as part of the company’s drive to reduce overheads; the disposal of the company’s majority interest in its Israel plant is also planned; $90m is to be invested in Greenock and a further $120m in the company’s Arlington, Texas plant.
