National Semiconductor’s National Advanced Systems – for a little while longer – has put US prices on the new features for its 7480 Cartridge Tape Subsystem, and given details of the new prices, which represent reductions of up to 13% (1,079). National Advanced says that customers who are unable to use the 6Mbyte per-second channel speed option can now get 50% improvement by moving up to 4.5Mbyte-per-second data streaming. The optional fast rewind feature, $2,000, cuts rewind time to 32 seconds from 48 seconds per cartridge, out in April. Support for 4.5Mbps will be out in first quarter 1989 at $4,000, and $1,000 to upgrade each channel. All 7480s can field-upgrade to the new channel speeds and ones shipped after November 1 qualify for 4.5Mbps support at no charge. The 7480-A22 controller is cut to $54,100, the 7480-B22 drive to $37,850, the Auto-tape loader to $7,800 and the dual contral feature to $8,100.
