NAI was to integrate parts of ISS’s RealSecure intrusion detection system (IDS) into its Sniffer line of products, but instead it this week bought IntruVert Inc, a provider of intrusion prevention systems (IPS) for $100m.

Basically, we felt we needed to own this technology, NAI executive VP of corporate development and strategic research Sandra England said. She said NAI has stopped its work integrating ISS’s packet analysis software into Sniffer.

No products had been finished. NAI expected to move an IDS offering late in the second quarter. Now, it will sell IntruVert’s IPS products separately, ahead of a 2004 integration with Sniffer.

England said that NAI bought each of the IPS products currently on the market and lab-tested them before deciding which company to buy. She said ISS’s IPS-type parts of RealSecure do not have the same level of functionality.

England said that a second part of the deal, in which ISS was to integrate NAI’s McAfee anti-virus software into its security gateways, is also believed to be over. A third part, which called for cooperative research, could survive.

We definitely expect there may be opportunity for continued partnership on research, England said. We continue to keep the doors open.
