MySQL 5.0 has been described as the most important release in MySQL’s history, by the Uppsala, Sweden-based VP of community relations, Kaj Arno, and will include support for stored procedures, triggers, and views, making it more suitable for existing enterprise applications.

The new version has certainly been a long time in development. It entered alpha testing in January 2004 and beta testing at the end of the year and was originally scheduled for generally available at the end of the first quarter or beginning of the second quarter of 2005.

The company’s vice president of marketing, Zack Urlocker, explained to ComputerWire last year that the delay was caused by MySQL wanting to be sure that the new enterprise features did not impact the database’s performance in serving web-based applications, its core market to date.

With MySQL 5.0 having reached a point of stability, Arno is now encouraging the MySQL users community to do all new database development using the new version so that the company can find and fix any remaining bugs.
