MusicNet to power HMV’s music downloading service

MusicNet, a digital music service provider, is to power entertainment retailer HMV's new digital music service, which is expected to launch later this year.

By CBR Staff Writer

HMV, which also currently operates an online store, is employing MusicNet to provide the back-end technology, software, support and content to be drawn from its digital music library.

The announcement comes after HMV revealed last December that it entered into a partnership with Microsoft to develop a customized Jukebox, enabling its digital customers to manage music online from one place.

The new service’s music content is thought to be compatible with the Windows Media Audio standard and most portable media players. In addition, the software and hardware required will be distributed via HMV’s UK network of stores and online.

The company is expecting to support the new service with an investment of GBP10m including capital investment and launch marketing.
