Jaguar Communications Plc, St Albans, Hetfordshire has launched the DV2, a high-performance multimedia Asynchronous Transfer Mode switch, said to be capable of supporting total transfer rates up to 6.4Gbps. It integrates a variety of existing traffic including Ethernet, HDLC data and Frame Relay into a high speed backbone with throughput up to 3.2Gbps. Jaguar also says it will support new Broadband ISDN applications that need the speed and bandwidth inherent with Asynchronous Transfer Mode. The DV2’s architecture is claimed to enable interconnection over the wide area network while simultaneously operating as a local network hub for distributing traffic across a multi-site environment. Jaguar says the switch’s structure is capable of 200Mbps or 400Mbps concurrent throughput in either direction to each of the 16-slot controllers. A local fibre slot controller with two 100Mbps fibre optic interfaces can be used to interconnect switches over a multi-site network or between floors. This slot can also be used to connect the switch to high-performance workstations.
Ethernet
Virtual Circuit Emulation is said to provide transparent transport of protocol-independent bit streams at up to 2.048Mbps. It also enables devices like digital PABXs, video codecs and existing Time Division Multiplexors to be attached to the system, while the DV2’s dual Frame Relay and Frame Transport boards enable devices – such as routers, bridges, X25 devices and Statistical Multiplexors – to be integrated to the system. Direct Ethernet Connectivity enables routing and bridging functions in the switch. The DV2 switch can be configured as a high-performance Ethernet hub supporting up to 64 Ethernet segments, and each Ethernet adaption interface is provided with four AUI ports. All boards and power supply modules are hot-swappable. Jaguar also announced the 7700 Series family of intelligent switching hubs, said to feature Collapsible Backbone Technology, a graphics-based management system enabling mouse-driven logical network reconfiguration and local area network station movement, and automatic switch services to back up systems; and the 4000 Series Routers product range.
