Online retailer Amazon is planning to expand its mobile device business segment with the launch of a new smartphone in June 2014.
The company has been reportedly demonstrating versions of it new handset to developers in San Francisco and Seattle over the past few weeks, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing unidentified sources.
The smartphone is expected to be available in market sometime in the second half of this year, most likely in late September, the paper reports.
The phone will reprotedly be capable of displaying three-dimensional-like images without the need for special glasses and embed retina-tracking technology in four front-facing cameras to display 3D images claimed to be similar to a hologram.
The 3D screen technology is capable of sensing the movement of a person’s eyes along with the device’s distance from user’s face and automatically manipulate text and images.
Amazon has reportedly signed a deal with smartphone display makers Japan Display to produce the as-yet-unnamed device, which is expected to manufacture in large numbers, with an initial order of 600,000 units.
The smartphone will be the latest addition to Amazon’s hardware portfolio, which already includes the Kindle Fire tablets and e-reader, as well as the company’s Fire TV set-top box, which was launched last week.
